Understanding Your Birthmarks

Many skin markings and growths slowly form over time due to natural factors such as aging, sun exposure, hormonal fluctuations, and genetics. On the other hand, many people are born with these markings, called birthmarks. Birthmarks can appear anywhere on the body and can be virtually any size. For many people, a birthmark can be very bothersome, leading to insecurities and a lack of confidence.

At Anolik Dermatology in New York City, our Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Robert Anolik, offers various treatments to remove or improve the appearance of birthmarks so that you can be confident in your rejuvenated, smoother skin and clearer appearance.

What are Birthmarks?

Birthmarks are common skin discolorations or growths present at birth or shortly after. Most birthmarks are harmless and do not pose health concerns. Birthmarks generally fall into two primary categories: pigmented and vascular.

Pigmented birthmarks occur when there are excess pigment cells and are broken into three subcategories: café-au-lait spots, moles, and Mongolian spots. Café-au-lait spots are flat, oval, or round patches that range in color from light tan to dark brown. Moles are brown or tan, small to large, or flat, raised spots that resemble smooth, warty, or bumpy growths. Mongolian spots are flat, bluish-gray patches that usually appear on the lower back or buttocks, primarily in infants with darker skin tones.

Vascular birthmarks are caused by abnormal blood vessels and are usually red, pink, and/or purple. The first type of vascular birthmark is a salmon patch, a flat, light pink or red patch typically located on the eyelids, forehead, or back of the neck. Another type of vascular birthmark is a hemangioma, which is an abnormal cluster of blood vessels that appears as bright red or bluish-gray raised bumps deep beneath the skin. Lastly, there are port-wine stains, which are flat, discolored patches that look like dark red wine splashed on the skin.

Birthmark Treatments We Offer

Birthmarks are primarily removed using laser therapy. The lasers are designed to target different depths of the birthmark from various angles. Laser treatments are often combined with each other, offering enhanced, comprehensive results.

Lasers used to reduce pigmentation are often called Q-Switched or Pico lasers. These lasers deliver beams of light that target melanin in the birthmark. The laser energy shatters the pigment into microscopic particles, which are naturally filtered and removed by the body. Q-Switched lasers emit concentrated light in ultra-short, highly energetic pulses while preserving the surrounding tissue. Pico lasers target pigmentation and stimulate collagen production, which helps rebuild the skin for a tight, healthy appearance.
