What is Sun Damage?
Sun damage is the structural breakdown and premature aging of skin cells caused by ongoing or persistent ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. While many think it only affects the superficial skin layers, it actually damages the skin’s DNA. When the UV radiation damages the skin’s DNA, it destroys the proteins that keep the skin firm, vibrant, and youthful.
There are two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin’s layers. These rays are primarily responsible for premature aging, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. UVB rays affect the skin’s outer layer, causing sunburn. Both forms may lead to skin cancer.
